Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is one of the safer towns in Morocco for tourists, with a laid-back atmosphere compared to larger cities like Marrakech or Fez. The main annoyances are persistent touts and cannabis sellers rather than serious crime. Solo female travelers generally report feeling comfortable here.

Yangon

Yangon itself is relatively safe for tourists in terms of street crime β€” violent crime against foreigners is rare and the Burmese people are overwhelmingly warm and welcoming. However, Myanmar's broader political instability following the 2021 military coup has created significant safety concerns. Check current travel advisories from your government before planning a trip. Some areas of Myanmar are off-limits or dangerous.

🌀️ Weather

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen has a Mediterranean climate moderated by its mountain elevation. Summers are warm and dry, winters are cool and wet. The town receives more rainfall than most Moroccan cities due to its Rif Mountain location. Snow occasionally dusts the peaks above town in winter.

Autumn (September - November)12-26Β°C

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a small town best explored entirely on foot. The medina is car-free and the entire town can be crossed in about 20 minutes. For trips outside town (Akchour waterfalls, mountain treks), you will need a grand taxi or arranged transport.

Walkability: Chefchaouen is supremely walkable β€” the medina is compact, car-free, and designed for pedestrians. However, streets are often steep with uneven stone steps, so good footwear is essential. The walk from the bus station to the medina is about 15 minutes uphill.

Walking β€” Free
Grand Taxis (Shared Mercedes) β€” MAD 50-80 (~$5-8) shared to Fez; MAD 300-400 (~$30-40) private
Petit Taxis β€” MAD 10-20 (~$1-2) within town

Yangon

Yangon's transport is chaotic but cheap. Taxis are the most practical option for tourists β€” always negotiate the fare before getting in. The Grab app works in Yangon and provides transparent pricing. Local buses are crowded and confusing. The Circular Railway is a great experience but impractical for getting around quickly.

Walkability: Downtown Yangon is compact and walkable for the colonial district, Sule Pagoda, Chinatown, and the markets. Sidewalks are challenging β€” broken, narrow, and shared with vendors, parked cars, and food stalls. Crossing major roads requires patience and nerve. Shwedagon is a 30-minute walk from downtown or a short taxi ride.

Taxis / Grab β€” K 2,000-5,000 (~$0.95-2.40) for city trips; Grab prices are similar but fixed
YBS (Yangon Bus Service) β€” K 200-300 (~$0.10-0.15) per trip
Circular Railway β€” K 300 (~$0.15) for the full loop
