πŸ›‘οΈ Safety

Amman

Jordan is one of the safest countries in the Middle East and Amman reflects this. Violent crime is extremely rare. Jordanian hospitality is legendary β€” locals routinely go out of their way to help visitors. The main concerns are minor traffic-related dangers and occasional tourist overcharging.

Doha

Doha is among the safest cities in the world for tourists. Violent crime is extremely rare, theft is uncommon, and the city is well-policed. The main concerns for visitors are legal rather than physical β€” Qatar's laws around dress, public behaviour, alcohol, and personal conduct differ significantly from Western norms and carry real penalties.

🌀️ Weather

Amman

Amman has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. At 850 m elevation, it's cooler than you might expect for a Middle Eastern city. Winters can be genuinely cold with occasional snow. Spring and autumn are ideal visiting seasons.

Spring (March - May)10-25Β°C
Summer (June - August)18-34Β°C
Autumn (September - November)14-30Β°C
Winter (December - February)4-13Β°C

Doha

Doha has a hot desert climate with a brutal summer season that makes most outdoor activity dangerous. From May through September, temperatures regularly exceed 40-45Β°C with high Gulf humidity. The shamal β€” a northwesterly wind that carries sand β€” can reduce visibility to near zero. The pleasant season runs October through April, with mild temperatures and almost no rain. This narrow window is when Doha truly comes alive.

Summer (May - September)35-48Β°C
Autumn (October - November)25-38Β°C
Winter (December - February)15-25Β°C
Spring (March - April)20-35Β°C

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Amman

Amman's public transport is limited compared to other capitals. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the primary way for tourists to get around. A new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is improving coverage. The city is spread across steep hills, making walking between neighborhoods challenging.

Walkability: Amman is built on steep hills, making walking between neighborhoods exhausting but rewarding for the views. Downtown, Rainbow Street, and Jabal Luweibdeh are walkable on their own. The walk from the Citadel down to the Roman Theater is a classic Amman walk. Sidewalks are uneven and often occupied by parked cars.

Careem / Uber β€” JOD 1-5 (~$1.40-7) for most trips within Amman
Yellow Taxis β€” JOD 1-4 (~$1.40-5.60) for most city trips
Amman Bus (BRT) β€” JOD 0.35-0.55 (~$0.50-0.78)

Doha

Doha has good transport infrastructure by Gulf standards, anchored by a modern driverless metro system that opened for the 2022 World Cup. However, the city is spread out and designed around cars rather than pedestrians, and the summer heat makes walking impractical for most of the year. Most visitors combine the metro with taxis or ride-hailing apps.

Walkability: Limited. Doha's urban design prioritises vehicles over pedestrians, and the climate restricts walking to a few months per year. The Corniche promenade, Souq Waqif interior, and Pearl-Qatar marina are genuinely walkable during the cool season. Outside these areas, walking between attractions is not practical.

Doha Metro β€” QAR 2-6 (~$0.55-1.65) per journey; QAR 6 day pass
Karwa Taxis β€” QAR 4 flag fall + QAR 1.20/km; most short trips QAR 15-40
Uber & Careem β€” Similar to Karwa; surge pricing during peak hours

The Verdict

Choose Amman if...

you want Jordan's friendly capital + launchpad β€” Amman Citadel, Roman Theatre, Petra + Wadi Rum + Dead Sea all within 3 hours

Choose Doha if...

you want a Gulf layover or short break β€” Souq Waqif, Museum of Islamic Art, the Pearl, Inland Sea desert, and Qatar Airways stopover deals
