π‘οΈ Safety
Athens
Athens is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are pickpocketing on crowded metro lines and in tourist areas (Monastiraki, Plaka, Syntagma), bag snatching on motorbikes, and some petty scams. Exercise normal urban awareness, especially on public transport and at night around Omonia Square.
Berlin
Berlin is generally safe for travelers. Violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty theft occurs at major tourist sites and on public transit, particularly the U-Bahn and S-Bahn. Some neighborhoods feel rougher at night but are rarely dangerous.

Athens has a hot Mediterranean climate with long, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35Β°C and the Acropolis bakes in the sun. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing. Winter is mild with some rain but temperatures rarely drop below 5Β°C.
Berlin
Berlin has a continental climate with warm summers and cold, grey winters. The city gets less rainfall than London but the overcast winter days can feel relentless. Summer days are long with sunset after 9:30 PM in June.
π Getting Around
Athens
Athens has a modern metro system (built for the 2004 Olympics), extensive bus and trolleybus network, and a tram line to the coast. A single ticket costs β¬1.20 and is valid for 90 minutes on all modes. The 5-day tourist ticket (β¬9) is excellent value.
Walkability: Central Athens is very walkable, though hilly in places. The pedestrianized Dionyssiou Areopagitou walkway around the Acropolis is one of Europe's finest urban walks. Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma are all within easy walking distance of each other. The heat in summer can make walking exhausting β carry water.
Berlin
Berlin has one of Europe's best public transit systems run by BVG (buses, trams, U-Bahn) and S-Bahn Berlin. The network is divided into zones A, B, and C. Most visitors only need AB. A single AB ticket costs β¬3.20 and a day pass β¬8.80. The 49-Euro Deutschlandticket covers all local transit nationwide for a calendar month.
Walkability: Berlin is very flat and extremely bikeable β consider renting a bike from Nextbike or Swapfiets. Walking between sights in Mitte is easy but distances across the city are large. The city has over 900 km of dedicated bike lanes.
