Athens

Athens is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are pickpocketing on crowded metro lines and in tourist areas (Monastiraki, Plaka, Syntagma), bag snatching on motorbikes, and some petty scams. Exercise normal urban awareness, especially on public transport and at night around Omonia Square.

Sofia

Sofia is generally safe for tourists. Petty crime like pickpocketing occurs in tourist areas and on public transport, but violent crime against visitors is rare. The city is safer than many Western European capitals. Standard urban awareness is sufficient.

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Athens

Athens has a modern metro system (built for the 2004 Olympics), extensive bus and trolleybus network, and a tram line to the coast. A single ticket costs €1.20 and is valid for 90 minutes on all modes. The 5-day tourist ticket (€9) is excellent value.

Walkability: Central Athens is very walkable, though hilly in places. The pedestrianized Dionyssiou Areopagitou walkway around the Acropolis is one of Europe's finest urban walks. Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma are all within easy walking distance of each other. The heat in summer can make walking exhausting β€” carry water.

Athens Metro β€” €1.20 (90 min) / €4.10 (24h) / €9.00 (5-day)
OASA Buses & Trolleybuses β€” €1.20 (90 min, same ticket as metro)

Sofia

Sofia has a modern and expanding metro system, complemented by an extensive network of trams, buses, and trolleybuses operated by Sofia Urban Mobility Center. The city center is walkable and ride-hailing apps are affordable.

Walkability: The city center is compact and very walkable, with most major sights within a 20-minute radius of the Serdica metro station. Vitosha Boulevard, the City Garden, and the area around Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are excellent on foot. Sidewalks are generally in decent condition in the center.

Sofia Metro (4 lines) β€” 1.60 BGN ($0.87) single ride; 4 BGN ($2.18) day pass
Trams, Buses & Trolleybuses β€” 1.60 BGN ($0.87) single ride (same as metro)
Bolt / Spark β€” 5-15 BGN ($2.73-8.18) for most city trips

The Verdict

Choose Athens if...

you want the Acropolis + Parthenon, Plaka tavernas, Acropolis Museum, Lycabettus sunset, and an island ferry out of Piraeus

Choose Sofia if...

you want the Balkans' most underrated capital β€” Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Boyana Church frescoes, Vitosha Mountain hikes, and Rila Monastery day-trips
