Athens

Athens is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are pickpocketing on crowded metro lines and in tourist areas (Monastiraki, Plaka, Syntagma), bag snatching on motorbikes, and some petty scams. Exercise normal urban awareness, especially on public transport and at night around Omonia Square.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is generally safe for tourists. Petty crime exists but is less of a concern than in Athens. The main risks are pickpocketing in crowded areas and occasional protests that can block streets.

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Athens

Athens has a modern metro system (built for the 2004 Olympics), extensive bus and trolleybus network, and a tram line to the coast. A single ticket costs €1.20 and is valid for 90 minutes on all modes. The 5-day tourist ticket (€9) is excellent value.

Walkability: Central Athens is very walkable, though hilly in places. The pedestrianized Dionyssiou Areopagitou walkway around the Acropolis is one of Europe's finest urban walks. Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma are all within easy walking distance of each other. The heat in summer can make walking exhausting β€” carry water.

Athens Metro β€” €1.20 (90 min) / €4.10 (24h) / €9.00 (5-day)
OASA Buses & Trolleybuses β€” €1.20 (90 min, same ticket as metro)
Athens Tram β€” €1.20 (90 min, same ticket as metro)

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki relies on buses as its main public transport β€” the long-awaited metro is still under construction. The city center is very walkable and taxis are affordable.

Walkability: Excellent in the flat center and along the waterfront. Ano Poli (upper town) requires climbing steep streets but is rewarding. The city is compact enough that most sights are accessible on foot.

OASTH Buses β€” €1.00 single, €4.50 day pass
Taxis β€” €3-10 for most city trips
Walking β€” Free

The Verdict

Choose Athens if...

you want the Acropolis + Parthenon, Plaka tavernas, Acropolis Museum, Lycabettus sunset, and an island ferry out of Piraeus

Choose Thessaloniki if...

you want Greece's second city β€” Byzantine churches (UNESCO), White Tower, Ano Poli old town, bougatsa breakfasts, and the best food scene outside Athens
