πŸ›‘οΈ Safety

Dakar60/100Safety Scoreβœ“72/100Kigali

Dakar

Dakar is one of the safest major cities in West Africa. Violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching, scams) occurs in crowded areas like markets and around tourist sites. Senegalese people are famously welcoming. Exercise standard precautions and you'll have a smooth experience.

Kigali

Kigali is one of the safest capital cities in Africa. Strict law enforcement, low crime rates, and a strong sense of community order make it notably secure. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. Petty theft is uncommon. The biggest adjustment is the very strict laws around plastic bags, jaywalking, and public order.

🌀️ Weather

Dakar

Dakar has a hot semi-arid climate moderated by Atlantic breezes. There are two distinct seasons: a long dry season (November-May) with very little rain and pleasant temperatures, and a short rainy season (June-October) with hot, humid conditions and brief but intense downpours. Being on a peninsula, Dakar is generally cooler than inland Senegal.

Cool Dry Season (November - February)18-27Β°C
Hot Dry Season (March - May)20-30Β°C
Rainy Season (Hivernage) (June - October)24-32Β°C

Kigali

Kigali enjoys a mild tropical highland climate thanks to its 1,500-meter elevation. Temperatures are remarkably consistent year-round β€” warm days and cool nights. There are two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The altitude makes it much cooler than you'd expect for a city near the equator.

Short Dry Season (January - February)15-28Β°C
Long Rainy Season (March - May)15-26Β°C
Long Dry Season (June - September)14-27Β°C
Short Rainy Season (October - December)15-27Β°C

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Dakar

Dakar's traffic is notoriously congested, particularly during weekday rush hours. The recently opened BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system has improved transit on major corridors. Taxis are abundant, and ride-hailing apps like Yango and Heetch are popular. The iconic "car rapides" β€” colorfully painted minibuses β€” are a cultural experience but chaotic for newcomers.

Walkability: Central Dakar (Plateau district) is compact and walkable during the day. The Corniche coastal road is pleasant for walking with ocean views. However, sidewalks are often broken or nonexistent in other neighborhoods. Traffic makes pedestrian crossings hazardous. Les Almadies and the Plateau are the most pedestrian-friendly areas.

Yango / Heetch β€” CFA 1,500-5,000 (~$2.50-8.50) for most city trips
BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) β€” CFA 300-500 (~$0.50-0.85)
Yellow & Black Taxis β€” CFA 1,500-5,000 (~$2.50-8.50) for city trips

Kigali

Kigali has a well-organized public bus system and widely available moto-taxis (motorcycle taxis). The city is hilly and spread out, so walking between neighborhoods requires stamina. Ride-hailing apps have transformed urban transport.

Walkability: Kigali is spread across steep hills, making walking between neighborhoods tiring but rewarding for views. Individual neighborhoods like Nyamirambo and Kimironko are walkable. The city center is improving with wider sidewalks and pedestrian areas. Carry water β€” the hills and altitude take effort.

KBS / Royal Express Buses β€” RWF 200-300 (~$0.15-0.25) per ride
Moto-Taxis β€” RWF 500-2,000 (~$0.40-1.55) depending on distance
Move / Yego / SafeMotos β€” RWF 1,000-5,000 (~$0.80-3.90) for car rides; motos cheaper
