🛡️ Safety

Easter Island88/100Safety Score65/100Santiago

Easter Island

Easter Island is extraordinarily safe — one of the safest destinations in the Americas. Violent crime against tourists is essentially unknown, petty theft is rare, and the tight-knit community of 8,000 means anonymity is impossible. The real hazards are environmental: strong sun, unexpected surf, slippery cliffside paths at Orongo, and the absence of a full hospital on the island itself. The island's remoteness means serious medical emergencies often require medical evacuation to Santiago.

Santiago

Santiago is one of the safer major cities in South America. Violent crime against tourists is rare, but petty theft — pickpocketing, bag snatching, and phone theft — is a constant concern in crowded areas and on public transit.

🌤️ Weather

Easter Island

Easter Island has a subtropical maritime climate moderated by the vast surrounding Pacific — temperatures are mild and remarkably stable year-round, rarely exceeding 28°C in summer or dropping below 15°C in winter. Rain falls in every month but is heaviest in May through August. The island is exposed to the open ocean on all sides, so strong wind is a near-constant feature regardless of season.

Austral Summer (Peak Season) (December - February)20-28°C
Austral Autumn (Shoulder) (March - May)18-25°C
Austral Winter (June - August)15-22°C
Austral Spring (Shoulder) (September - November)16-24°C

Santiago

Santiago has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The Andes are snowcapped from June through October. Air quality can suffer in winter when thermal inversions trap smog in the valley.

Spring (September - November)8-23°C
Summer (December - February)14-32°C
Autumn (March - May)8-25°C
Winter (June - August)3-15°C

🚇 Getting Around

Easter Island

There is no public transport system on Easter Island — no buses, no taxis on meters, and no ride-hailing apps. The island is small (163 km² total) and roads are generally good paved or graded surfaces, making rental vehicles the default. A rented 4x4, car, scooter, or mountain bike is almost universal for visitors who want to see the full moai circuit. Guided day tours are the alternative for those who prefer not to drive.

Walkability: Hanga Roa itself is small and walkable end-to-end in 20 minutes. The major moai sites, however, are spread across the island — Tongariki is 18 km from town, Anakena 18 km, Ahu Akivi 10 km. No site can be realistically reached on foot except Tahai (15 min walk from the town centre) and the Orongo / Rano Kau rim (2.5 hr hike up).

Rental Car / 4x4$60–100 USD/day small car; $80–140 USD/day 4x4
Rented Scooter / ATV$35–55 USD/day scooter; $60–90 USD/day ATV
Mountain Bike$15–25 USD/day

Santiago

Santiago has an excellent Metro system and extensive bus network (Transantiago/RED). The Bip! card works across all public transit. Rush hour can be intense, but outside peak times the system runs smoothly.

Walkability: Central Santiago is very walkable. Lastarria, Bellavista, Providencia, and the Centro Historico are all best explored on foot. The city is flat between the two cerros (hills), making walking easy. Summer heat can be intense — carry water.

Santiago MetroCLP 640-800 (~$0.70-0.90 USD) depending on time of day
RED Buses (formerly Transantiago)CLP 640-800 (~$0.70-0.90 USD) per ride with Bip! card
Uber / Cabify / DiDiCLP 3,000-10,000 (~$3-11 USD) for most cross-city trips

The Verdict

Choose Easter Island if...

you want the most remote inhabited island on Earth — Ahu Tongariki sunrise, Rano Raraku quarry, Rapa Nui culture, LATAM-only flights from Santiago

Choose Santiago if...

you want the Andes at the end of the metro — Cerro San Cristóbal funicular, Barrio Lastarria, Concha y Toro, Cajón del Maipo, and ski at Valle Nevado
