Muscat

Muscat is one of the safest capital cities in the world. Violent crime is virtually nonexistent, theft is extremely rare, and the culture of hospitality means visitors are treated with genuine warmth. The main risks are traffic accidents and heat-related illness.

Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is generally a safe city with low crime rates. Street crime is uncommon and the city is lively late into the night. The primary concerns relate to the regional geopolitical situation rather than everyday crime. Check travel advisories before visiting. The LGBTQ+ community is very welcome, making it one of the most inclusive cities in the Middle East.

πŸš‡ Getting Around

Muscat

Muscat is spread along 60 km of coastline, making a car essential for serious exploration. Public transport is limited but improving with the Mwasalat bus network. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the main options for visitors without a car. Walking is impractical in most areas due to heat and distances.

Walkability: Muscat is not a walkable city in any conventional sense β€” it stretches 60 km along the coast. However, Mutrah (corniche and souq), Old Muscat, and the Qurum beach area are pleasant walking zones. The heat makes walking difficult for much of the year. Dawn and dusk walks along the corniche are magical.

Metered Taxis / Airport Taxis β€” OMR 2-8 (~$5-21) for most city trips; airport to city OMR 8-15 (~$21-39)

Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is becoming increasingly well-connected with buses, a light rail under expansion, shared bikes, and ride-hailing apps. The city is flat and bike-friendly. Note that most public transport stops for Shabbat (Friday sunset to Saturday sunset), though sheruts (shared taxis) and ride-hailing continue.

Walkability: Tel Aviv is very walkable β€” it's flat, compact, and most attractions are within walking distance or a short ride. The beachfront promenade (tayelet) runs 14 km and is the best walking route. Rothschild Boulevard, Neve Tzedek, and Jaffa are all wonderful on foot. Summer heat is the main deterrent.

Tel Aviv Light Rail (Red Line) β€” ILS 5.50 (~$1.55) per ride with Rav-Kav
