Krabi
Southern Thailand's Andaman coast is limestone-karst country — Railay's boat-only beach cliffs, Phra Nang Cave, Ao Nang's mainland base, and ferries to Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. The Tiger Cave Temple's 1,260-step climb rewards with the panorama. Rock climbing mecca, kayaking through mangroves at Ao Thalane, and roughly half the price of Phuket.

Krabi sits on Thailand's Andaman Coast, where thousands of limestone karst towers rise dramatically from turquoise water — the same geological formation as Phang Nga Bay, but here you can climb them
Railay Beach is only accessible by longtail boat — sheer limestone cliffs cut it off completely from the mainland, giving it the feel of a remote island despite being a peninsula
Railay is one of the world's premier rock climbing destinations, with bolted routes on vertical limestone karsts directly above the sea — beginners and experts both find routes here
Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple) demands a 1,260-step climb to a hilltop Buddha with sweeping views over Krabi province — most tourists skip it, making the summit reward even greater
Krabi is the ferry gateway to Phi Phi Islands (45 min), Koh Lanta (2.5 hr), and Koh Yao Noi/Yai — some of the most diverse island-hopping in Southeast Asia from a single base
The monsoon season runs May to October — rain is frequent, seas are rougher, and prices drop around 40%, attracting a younger, longer-stay crowd who trade beach perfection for budget savings
Top Sights
Railay Beach & West Railay
🏖️The jewel of Krabi — a peninsula flanked by sheer limestone karsts and fringed with white sand. West Railay has the main beach and longtail pier; East Railay is mangrove-lined. A ten-minute walk across the peninsula connects them. Arrive early before the day-trip boats from Ao Nang turn up around 10am.
Phra Nang Cave Beach
🏖️Widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand — a strip of fine white sand tucked beneath towering karsts, with a cave at the southern end filled with wooden phallus offerings left by local fishermen to the sea goddess Phra Nang. Reached by a short walk from East Railay.
Ao Nang Beach & Viewpoint
🏖️The main mainland beach town, with a long beach facing karst-dotted water, a busy beachfront strip of restaurants and bars, and longtail boats lined up to ferry passengers to Railay. The viewpoint above Ao Nang — reached by motorbike or on foot via a steep path — delivers a sweeping panorama of the bay best seen at sunset.
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua)
🏯A forest monastery north of Krabi Town with a 1,260-step staircase carved into the limestone ridge above. The summit holds a large gold Buddha and panoramic views of rice paddies, jungle, and coastline. The climb takes 30-45 minutes and is steep — go early morning before the heat builds. The temple complex below has monks in residence and caves worth exploring.
Emerald Pool & Hot Springs
🌿Sa Morakot (Emerald Pool) is a naturally turquoise freshwater pool deep inside Thung Teao Forest — its vivid green color comes from mineral-rich springs that feed it. A 1.5 km boardwalk trail through tropical forest leads to the pool, which is warm and swimmable. Nearby hot springs (around 40°C) make a relaxing pairing. A half-day trip from Ao Nang.
Phi Phi Islands Day Trip
🏝️The Phi Phi archipelago sits 40 km west of Krabi — just 45 minutes by speedboat — and offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Southeast Asia. Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh (the filming location of The Beach) reopened with visitor limits; the surrounding coral and turquoise water remain spectacular. Phi Phi Don has snorkeling, nightlife, and accommodation for those who stay overnight.
Hong Islands Kayak & Snorkel
🌿Koh Hong and the surrounding archipelago feature enclosed lagoons (hongs) accessible only by kayaking through low limestone tunnels at low tide. The interior water is glassy-calm and surrounded by sheer karst walls — one of the most otherworldly experiences in the region. Best booked as a half-day kayak-and-snorkel tour from Ao Nang.
Krabi Town Night Market
🏪The provincial capital on the Krabi River is notably less touristed than Ao Nang and offers a genuine slice of southern Thai life. The Walking Street night market runs Friday through Sunday evenings along Maharaj Road, with fresh seafood, Thai curries, mango sticky rice, and cheap beer. The riverside promenade is pleasant in the evening and the town makes a good base for those who prefer local over beach-resort atmosphere.
Off the Beaten Path
Sunrise at Railay Before the Boats
Take the first longtail from Ao Nang (around 7am) and arrive at West Railay before the day-trippers. The beach is empty, the light is golden on the karsts, and the water is glassy-calm before the longtails start churning through. Most visitors arrive between 10am and 2pm — the morning belongs to overnight guests and early starters.
Railay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand but gets genuinely crowded by mid-morning. Two hours alone there in soft light is worth the early wake-up more than almost anything else in the region.
Krabi Town Walking Street (Fri–Sun)
The Friday-through-Sunday night market along Maharaj Road in Krabi Town is where locals actually eat and shop. Grilled seafood, southern Thai curries, roti with banana and condensed milk, fresh coconut ice cream, and whole roasted fish — all at prices a fraction of Ao Nang. The riverside setting is genuinely pretty.
Most Krabi visitors never leave Ao Nang except to go to Railay. The night market in Krabi Town is a completely different experience — local, affordable, and far more authentic than anything on the beach strip.
Koh Hong Kayak via Ao Thalane
Ao Thalane, a quiet mangrove inlet 20 km north of Ao Nang, is the launching point for kayak tours through karst-filled lagoons and the enclosed "hong" of Koh Hong. The guided half-day trip involves paddling through mangroves, beneath low limestone arches, and into hidden sea caves — one of the best active experiences in Krabi.
The Koh Hong tours leaving from Ao Nang are overrun; the Ao Thalane departure has far smaller groups and a more genuine wilderness feel. Ask specifically for the Ao Thalane departure when booking.
Tiger Cave Temple Sunrise Climb
The 1,260 steps to the summit of Wat Tham Sua take about 40 minutes and are genuinely steep — bring water and start by 6am to catch sunrise over the Krabi plains. Monkeys patrol the lower steps and will grab food. The summit Buddha at dawn, with mist lifting from the jungle below, is one of the best views in southern Thailand.
This temple is listed in every guide but almost no one actually does the sunrise climb — they visit mid-morning when it's sweltering. Early morning the steps are empty, the air is cool, and the view is extraordinary.
Ao Nang Viewpoint by Motorbike
A short steep road behind Ao Nang leads to a clifftop viewpoint overlooking the bay, karst islands, and longtail boats below. It's a 10-minute ride from Ao Nang on a rented motorbike (฿200/day), and the viewpoint is almost always empty compared to the beach below. Best around 5-6pm when the light turns the karsts amber.
Free, five minutes from the main beach strip, and almost no one goes. The sunset view of Ao Nang Bay is better from up here than from the beach itself — and there's no one to block the shot.
Insider Tips
Climate & Best Time to Go
Monthly climate & crowd levels
Krabi has a tropical monsoon climate dominated by two distinct seasons: a dry season with calm, azure seas (November to April) and a monsoon season with heavy rain and rough water (May to October). Sea temperature stays around 27-29°C year-round. The dry season brings the ideal postcard conditions most people picture, but even the wet season offers long sunny stretches between downpours.
Dry Season (Peak)
November - February77-90°F
25-32°C
The best time to visit. The Andaman Sea is calm and clear, longtail boats run on full schedules, and the beaches are at their most beautiful. Visibility for diving and snorkeling peaks in December-January. Crowds and prices peak over Christmas and New Year. Book accommodation weeks in advance for Railay and Ao Nang during December.
Hot Dry Season
March - April82-95°F
28-35°C
Temperatures peak and humidity builds as the monsoon approaches. Seas remain calm and beach weather is still excellent through most of April. Songkran (Thai New Year) on April 13-15 brings water fights to Ao Nang and Krabi Town. The final weeks of April can see the first pre-monsoon squalls, which pass quickly.
Monsoon Season
May - October77-90°F
25-32°C
Heavy rain arrives in May, often in dramatic afternoon and evening downpours, while mornings are frequently sunny and still beach-worthy. The Andaman side of southern Thailand gets the full force of the southwest monsoon — seas can be rough and ferries to outer islands (Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) sometimes cancel. Railay remains accessible but longtail crossings from Ao Nang can be choppy. Hotel rates fall 35-50%, making this the budget traveler's window. Restaurants are quieter, interactions with locals more genuine, and the jungle is spectacularly lush.
Transitional Season
September - October77-88°F
25-31°C
The wettest part of the monsoon, with October often the single rainiest month. Seas are at their roughest and some boat services to outer islands are suspended. However, prices are at their lowest, crowds are minimal, and Krabi Town and the Emerald Pool area are perfectly enjoyable between showers. The jungle is intensely green and waterfalls are at full force.
Best Time to Visit
November through March offers the most reliable beach weather with calm seas, clear skies, and cool evenings. April is hot but still good. May through October brings the monsoon — cheaper and quieter, but expect rain, rougher seas, and some ferry cancellations to outer islands.
Peak Dry Season (November - February)
Crowds: Very high — book accommodation 4-6 weeks ahead for December-JanuaryThe classic Krabi experience: calm turquoise seas, clear skies, and soft breezes. Railay is at its most beautiful and boat schedules to Phi Phi and Koh Lanta run like clockwork. This is also the busiest and most expensive period — Railay accommodation sells out weeks ahead over Christmas and New Year, and Ao Nang beach gets genuinely crowded at midday.
Pros
- + Perfect beach and sea conditions
- + Full ferry and boat schedules
- + Best visibility for diving and snorkeling
- + All beaches and attractions fully operational
Cons
- − Highest prices of the year
- − Railay and Ao Nang crowded from 10am-3pm
- − Christmas-New Year period requires advance booking
- − Tour operators may refuse to take small groups
Hot Season (March - April)
Crowds: Moderate — declining from peak seasonTemperatures climb into the low-to-mid 30s and humidity rises, but seas remain calm and beach conditions are still excellent. March is arguably the best month for combining good weather with slightly lower prices than peak. April brings Songkran — the Thai New Year water festival on April 13-15 turns Ao Nang and Krabi Town into one giant water fight, which is chaotic and joyful in equal measure.
Pros
- + Good beach weather with lower prices than Dec-Feb
- + Seas calm enough for all island trips
- + Songkran celebrations are genuinely fun
- + Fewer visitors than peak season
Cons
- − Intense heat especially in April, uncomfortable for active sightseeing midday
- − Songkran week sees accommodation spike in price and book up
- − Late April can bring first pre-monsoon storms
- − UV index extremely high
Monsoon Season (May - October)
Crowds: Low — particularly June-August when European schools are out but Andaman conditions are poorThe southwest monsoon brings Krabi to life in a different way — the jungle is intensely green, waterfalls at Thung Teao are full, and the crowds thin dramatically. Mornings are often sunny and perfectly swimmable; heavy rain typically arrives in the afternoon or evening. The outer islands (Phi Phi, Koh Lanta) become less accessible as ferry services reduce, but Railay remains reachable most days and Krabi Town is unaffected by sea conditions. Hotel prices drop 35-50% and guesthouse owners have more time for conversation. Dengue and mosquitoes increase during this period.
Pros
- + Hotel rates 35-50% lower than peak
- + Krabi Town and inland attractions unaffected by weather
- + Lush green jungle and full waterfalls at Emerald Pool
- + Fewer tourists means more authentic experiences
Cons
- − Rough seas can cancel Phi Phi and Koh Lanta ferries
- − Afternoon and evening rain is reliable
- − Some beachfront restaurants and beach clubs close
- − Increased dengue and mosquito risk
🎉 Festivals & Events
Songkran (Thai New Year)
April 13-15Thailand's national water festival sees Ao Nang and Krabi Town turn into massive water fights lasting 2-3 days. Locals and tourists soak each other with hoses, water guns, and buckets. Accept that everything you're wearing will be wet.
Loy Krathong
November (full moon)Thais release small lotus-shaped baskets (krathongs) bearing candles and incense onto the Krabi River and sea to honor the water goddess. The Krabi Town riverside is the best place to watch, with hundreds of lit krathongs drifting on the dark water.
Krabi Rock Climbing Festival
NovemberAn annual event drawing climbers from across Southeast Asia and beyond to compete on Railay's limestone walls. Beginner clinics and spectator events make it worth attending even if you don't climb.
Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai)
May (regional)A pre-monsoon Buddhist festival celebrated in nearby villages, where homemade rockets are fired skyward to encourage the rains to come. More visible in inland Krabi province than in Ao Nang.
Safety Breakdown
Moderate
out of 100
Krabi is a relatively safe destination for tourists. The area sees millions of visitors annually with a well-established tourism infrastructure. The main dangers are environmental and road-related rather than criminal — ocean hazards during monsoon, motorbike accidents, and sun exposure account for the majority of tourist incidents. Petty theft exists but serious crime targeting tourists is uncommon. Solo female travelers generally report feeling safe in both Ao Nang and Krabi Town.
Things to Know
- •Motorbike accidents are the single biggest cause of tourist injury and death in the region — if you rent a bike, wear a helmet at all times, drive slowly on wet roads, and do not attempt it without prior riding experience
- •Heed red flag warnings at Ao Nang and Railay beaches during monsoon — rip currents and strong shore break cause drownings every year, most involving tourists who ignore flags
- •Do not feed the monkeys at Railay and Phra Nang — they bite, can be aggressive about food, and will grab bags and bottles if you have anything visible
- •Always photograph rented motorbikes and longtail boats before departure — disputes over pre-existing damage are common
- •Use the Tourist Police (1155) rather than local police for most tourist-related issues — they speak English and are accustomed to dealing with travel problems
- •Sunburn is a genuine hazard — tropical sun at this latitude is intense even on overcast days; reef-safe SPF 50+ and long-sleeve rash guards are worth packing
- •Dengue fever is present year-round and rises during monsoon — use DEET-based repellent particularly at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
- •Falling coconuts cause injuries annually — heed signs under coconut palms on beaches; the danger is real and not a joke

💡 Money-Saving Tips
- •Base yourself in Krabi Town rather than Ao Nang — accommodation is 30-50% cheaper and the night market eats, food quality is arguably better
- •Take the shared songthaew between Krabi Town and Ao Nang (฿50-80) rather than taxis or Grab (฿200-300)
- •Use shared longtails to Railay (฿150) rather than private charters — the shared boats leave regularly during the day and cost a fifth of the price
- •Visit during monsoon season (May-October) for 35-50% lower hotel rates and far fewer crowds at beaches
- •Eat at the Krabi Town Walking Street on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights — full meals for under ฿100 that match any Ao Nang restaurant on quality
- •Book island day trips directly at Ao Nang pier rather than through guesthouses or hotel desks, which add a ฿200-400 booking commission
- •Tiger Cave Temple and the Ao Nang viewpoint are completely free — the best views in Krabi cost nothing
- •Buy drinking water at 7-Eleven (฿7 per bottle) rather than from beach vendors or restaurants (฿30-60)
Thai Baht
Code: THB
1 THB is approximately 0.03 USD (35 THB to 1 USD as of early 2026). ATMs are widely available along the Ao Nang strip and throughout Krabi Town. Bangkok Bank ATMs are most reliable for foreign cards and display instructions in English. Most ATMs charge a ฿220 foreign withdrawal fee — withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees. Exchange booths in Ao Nang and Krabi Town offer better rates than ATMs for cash exchanges; avoid airport exchange counters.
Payment Methods
Cash is essential in Krabi, particularly for longtail boats, markets, street food, and most small guesthouses. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, resort restaurants, and the Vogue Mall but often come with a 3-5% surcharge. ATMs at Ao Nang and Krabi Town are plentiful. Carry smaller bills (฿20, ฿50, ฿100) for boats and street food — vendors frequently cannot break ฿1,000 notes.
Tipping Guide
Not traditionally expected but appreciated at tourist-oriented restaurants. Ten percent is generous. Check bills — some upscale places add a 10% service charge automatically.
No tip expected. Rounding up small change is fine and welcomed but not customary.
A ฿20-50 tip per trip is appreciated, especially on rough crossings or if the driver waited for you. Not expected on shared fares.
฿100-200 per person for a full-day island or kayak tour is generous and warmly received. Guides depend heavily on tips.
฿20-50 per bag for porters; ฿20-50 per night for housekeeping at mid-range and above. Not expected at budget guesthouses.
฿50-100 per hour for traditional Thai massage. ฿200-300 at upscale spa venues.
How to Get There
✈️ Airports
Krabi International Airport(KBV)
12 km northeast of Krabi Town; 30 km from Ao NangAirport taxi to Krabi Town ฿500 (~$14); airport shuttle bus to Ao Nang ฿150 (~$4) per person. Grab app sometimes available at the terminal for better rates. Private transfer to Ao Nang ฿500-700. No public bus from the airport — shuttle vans are the budget option.
✈️ Search flights to KBV🚆 Rail Stations
Surat Thani Railway Station (nearest rail hub)
180 km north (3 hr by minivan)Krabi has no railway. The nearest station is Surat Thani, approximately 3 hours north by bus or minivan. From Bangkok, overnight trains (12-14h, ฿500-1,500 depending on class) arrive at Surat Thani, with connecting minivans to Krabi. The sleeper train from Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue stations to Surat Thani is a popular budget option for those with time.
🚌 Bus Terminals
Krabi Bus Terminal
Located in Krabi Town with services to Phuket (3h, ฿300-500), Surat Thani (3h, ฿200-300), Hat Yai (3.5h, ฿250-350), and overnight buses to Bangkok (12-14h, ฿700-1,200). Minivans (faster, less comfortable) depart from terminals near the pier for Phuket, Surat Thani, and other regional destinations. Book minivans through guesthouses or travel agents in Ao Nang.
Ao Nang Pier (ferry terminal)
Ferries to Phi Phi Islands (45 min, ฿350-450), Koh Lanta (2.5h, ฿400-600), and Phuket (2h, ฿350-500) depart from Ao Nang or Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Town depending on operator and season. The Ao Nang to Phuket ferry runs primarily in high season (Nov-April). Check current schedules as services change seasonally.
Getting Around
Water transport is as important as road transport in Krabi — longtail boats and ferries connect the beaches, islands, and mainland in ways no road can. On land, songthaews (shared pickup trucks) run fixed routes between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, while motorbike taxis and rentals cover shorter distances. The Grab app works in Ao Nang and Krabi Town but supply is limited compared to Phuket.
Longtail Boats
฿150 shared (~$4) to Railay; ฿1,200-1,800 (~$34-51) private charterThe essential mode of transport to Railay, Phra Nang, and nearby islands. Shared longtails run fixed-rate services from Ao Nang pier (฿150 per person each way to Railay, minimum 8 passengers or pay for empty seats). Private charter is available for about ฿1,500 per boat. During monsoon, crossings can be rough.
Best for: Railay, Phra Nang, island hopping close to shore
Songthaews (Shared Pickup Trucks)
฿50-80 (~$1.40-2.30) per person Krabi Town to Ao NangConverted pickup trucks with benches in the back serve the main corridor between Krabi Town and Ao Nang. They run frequently during the day and are very cheap — the standard way locals move between the town and beach area. Flag one down on the main road.
Best for: Budget transport between Krabi Town and Ao Nang
Motorbike Rental
฿200-250/day (~$6-7)Widely available in Ao Nang for around ฿200-250 per day. Good for exploring the Ao Nang viewpoint, reaching Tiger Cave Temple from Krabi Town, or getting to quieter beaches. Helmets are often poor quality — bring your own or inspect carefully.
Best for: Flexible independent exploration, viewpoints, Tiger Cave Temple
Grab App
฿100-300 (~$3-9) for most local tripsAvailable in Krabi and growing in coverage. More reliable pricing than negotiating with tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi drivers. Works best in Ao Nang and Krabi Town centers; coverage thin outside main areas.
Best for: Airport transfers, avoiding fare negotiations, late-night returns
Ferries to Islands
฿350-700 (~$10-20) to main islands; ฿700-1,200 (~$20-34) speedboat day tripsHigh-season ferries depart from Klong Jilad Pier (Krabi Town) and Ao Nang Pier to Phi Phi (฿350-450), Koh Lanta (฿400-600), and Koh Yao. Speedboat day trips to Phi Phi, Hong Islands, and Four Islands run from Ao Nang pier. During monsoon (May-Oct), check cancellations.
Best for: Island-hopping, day trips to Phi Phi and Hong Islands
🚶 Walkability
Ao Nang beach strip is walkable end-to-end in about 20 minutes and most restaurants, shops, and the longtail pier are on a single road. Krabi Town is also walkable around the river and night market area. However, between Ao Nang and Krabi Town (15 km) walking is impractical — use songthaew or Grab. Railay is car-free by necessity and entirely pedestrian.

Visa on Arrival
Tips
- •Keep your TM.6 departure card (stapled in your passport on arrival) — it is required when leaving Thailand and immigration staff will ask for it
- •Overstaying incurs a fine of ฿500 per day and can result in a re-entry ban; extensions at Krabi Town immigration are straightforward for a legitimate extra 30 days
- •For stays longer than 60 days, apply for a 60-day tourist visa at a Thai embassy before travel, or consider the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote workers
- •Dress modestly at Tiger Cave Temple and any Buddhist sites in Krabi province — shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are available to borrow at most temples
- •The Krabi Town immigration office (Th Phattana) handles extensions on weekdays 8:30am-4:30pm — bring passport, 2 photos, and ฿1,900 in cash

Language & Phrases
Thai has five tones — the same word spoken with a different pitch can mean something entirely different. Southern Thai (spoken in Krabi) has regional variations from Central Thai. Most Ao Nang and Railay tourism workers speak functional English; Krabi Town and local markets less so. Even a few words of Thai are met with genuine delight. Adding "kha" (female speaker) or "khrap" (male speaker) to the end of sentences softens any phrase and shows respect.

|---|---|---|
| Hello (female / male speaker) | Sawasdee kha / Sawasdee khrap | sah-wah-DEE kah / sah-wah-DEE krahp |
| Thank you (female / male speaker) | Khob khun kha / Khob khun khrap | kohp KOON kah / kohp KOON krahp |
